STORY
"Florentine Night" is a tale of friendship, hidden desires, the pursuit of self-discovery and the love for the art, the sculpture, the dance and the music.
The film is composed of two separate, parallel stories.
Maximilian tells to seriously ill Maria a mysterious story from his childhood - how he fell in love with a beautiful statue. The loss of the statue affects his whole life. Maximilian becomes a sculptor in search of means to recreate it.
Philip the watchmaker is devoid of any musical sensibility, but forced to enter a music competition in order to win the hand of his beloved. For this reason, he builds a musical machine that will win the contest for him.
The screenplay is based on the works of Heinrich Heine and Gérard de Nerval.
CHARACTERS
Maximillian
Maximilian is a complex mix of emotions and desires. His artistic nature manifests itself at an early age. His sensitivity to beauty left an imprint on his entire life. The strength of his emotions is such that his life becomes a quest for an unattainable ideal.

Maria
Maria is insightful and magnanimous, she comes close to Maximilian's ideal, but unfortunately, he discovers her too late. Maria wants to get to know him and so she is a good listener, and her questions incite Maximilian to reflect and understand himself better.

Lorain
Mademoiselle Laurent is a dancer who possesses a charge untouched by the constraints of the classical school. She carries within her something alive and unbridled that appeals to Maximilian strongly. He is captivated by her vitality hidden behind a facade of indifference and wants to use her as a bridge to real life.

Viola
Viola is an ordinary, sweet girl whose most characteristic feature is her complete lack of musical talent. She is a disappointment to her father, a famous craftsman of string instruments and musician, who had hoped his daughter would continue the family's musical tradition. But she is a joy to young Philip's heart and he prefers the sound of her voice to the most famous and sonorous sonatas.

Philip
Philip is a young man who also lacks the abilities of a musician but is passionate about mechanics and engineering. He is in love with Viola, and his romantic gestures are touching. His hard work, combined with his talent as a watchmaker, pays off and he wins the most important race of his life.

PLACES
Florence
It rarely snows in Florence, but the events in this story coincide with heavy snowstorms, the likes of which have not been seen in this city for years. Although most of the residents have taken shelter in the warmth, the streets are alive with the usual life - the lamplighters, the haulers and the policemen are doing their job because without them the city would cease to function.

The Mansion
"Your mother's castle". That's what Maximilian's father calls it, smiling mysteriously and winking at him.
The meaning of this smile Maximilian will understand later, when he becomes twelve years old.
The "castle" is a large house, but you could hardly find more than three rooms suitable for living. The house with its warped furniture and broken windows, its leaky ceilings and hollow floors, its moldy walls and torn wallpapers is surely a sorry embodiment of the transient nature of our world.

London
When, by chance, Maximilian finds himself in London, he does not like this city. At this time of year, the fog and annoying rain make the city unwelcoming and depressing. He doesn't like the people either, and their language irritates him. The only good thing is that they are silent by nature. But London is the city where Maximilian will meet a dancer and talk her into becoming a model for the statue he is working on.

Ambitus
This is the town of Ambitus. It’s neither small nor big,it has ancient houses and winding streets and the only remnant of its medieval fortress wall is the gate. It’s known as the Town of the Musicians. Not everybody in this town is a professional musician but all its citizens love and appreciate music. Most of them have been taking music lessons since they were little children, violin lessons or accordion lessons and later they would join one of the numerous local orchestras or the trio next door. Those who didn’t play any instrument, sang in the neighborhood or family quire and the best singers were soloists. There were many competitions in the town. It goes without saying that they were all music competitions.
